Depression in Diabetes – holistic treatment without the use of pharmaceutical drugs

Data from scientific studies tell us that Diabetes patients have, with respect to the general population, double the risk of developing Major Depressive Disorder.

The association between Diabetes and Depression represents a clinical situation of particular gravity. On the one hand depression symptoms worsen glycemic control and increase diabetic complications; on the other hand the metabolic alterations and the disabilities derived from diabetes can worsen depression.

Notwithstanding the important clinical implications and the frequent association between the two disorders, depression in diabetes patients is often underestimated or not diagnosed.

Unfortunately, however, the majority of antidepressants have a negative impact on glycemic control.

The use of neuro-modulation therapies, such as rTMS or PESF, allows for the achievement of excellent results with this particular clinical condition. With rTMS improving mood is achieved and with PESF the oxygen exchanges in the peripheral tissues and blood circulation are improved, glycemic control is improved and it favors a loss of weight.

Neuro-modulation techniques are accompanied moreover by an appropriate nutritional regimen and a specific physical activity program, which help to stimulate the organisim putting neurogenesis back in motion, and reducing aggressive metabolic factors, such as inflammatory cytokines, excessive levels of cortisol in the blood.

In short, a cycle of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy improves stress management; it helps to reacquire a healthy lifestyle and favors the adherences to medical prescriptions.

Depression and changes in metabolism are always associated and a return to a state of health must correspond to the balance of both conditions.

At the Institute of Neurosciences today it is possible to treat Depression in diabetic patients with a holistic treatment even without the use of pharmaceutical drugs:

Non-pharmaceutical Therapy

Electric Stimulation
